Building a Green Zero-Carbon Bridge with the World: Zhu Gongshan Attends Inaugural Global Enterprises Summit on High-Quality Belt and Road Cooperation in Indonesia?
From May 24 to 26, at the invitation of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Li Qiang, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Premier of the State Council, paid a state visit to Indonesia. This high-level diplomatic engagement not only opened new opportunities for bilateral cooperation across multiple fields but also demonstrated China’s firm commitment to deepening collaboration with Indonesia and other Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) partner countries.
During Li Qiang’s visit, the inaugural Global Enterprises Summit on High-Quality Belt and Road Cooperation kicked off in Jakarta and Bandung, Indonesia. Centered on the theme “Better Business, Better World: Accelerating the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goals,” the summit brought together high-profile global leaders from politics, business, and academia. Attendees included UN Assistant Secretary-General Sanda Ojiambo, UN Resident Coordinator in China Siddharth Chatterjee, Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Chairman of Indonesia’s National Economic Committee Luhut B. Pandjaitan, Xin Bao’an (Chairman of the Global Energy Interconnection Development Cooperation Organization and China Electricity Council), and Zhu Gongshan (Chairman of GCL Group, President of the Global Green Energy Council, and Chairman of the Asia Photovoltaic Industry Association). Discussions focused on corporate sustainability and energy transition.
At a closed-door meeting of the UN Global Compact’s “Belt and Road” Action Platform High-Level Steering Committee on May 24, Zhu Gongshan, as a newly appointed committee member, showcased GCL’s “green technological portfolio”: “GCL possesses over 10 cutting-edge technologies, including granular silicon, electronic-grade polysilicon, perovskite, high-purity silane gas, and cathode materials—five of which lead the global market. Notably, our granular silicon technology continues to set world records in carbon footprint reduction, driving decarbonization across the global PV industry.”
Zhu emphasized that the sustainability principles of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) align seamlessly with GCL’s 35-year commitment to green development. Since 2013, GCL has voluntarily published annual ESG reports, and Zhu himself has championed ESG advocacy at international forums such as BRI cooperation dialogues and SNEC conferences.
“GCL successfully built and operates Indonesia’s first environmentally friendly coal-fired power plant in Kaba, backed by a formal power purchase agreement and invested by a Chinese private enterprise,” Zhu noted. Bolstered by ESG practices, GCL’s “green partnership network” continues to expand. The company’s products and solutions now serve over 50 countries and regions, with a strategic focus on BRI partners. “Through green energy, GCL is bridging the world and advancing sustainable, high-quality development in the global new energy sector,” he added.
Premier Li Qiang’s emphasis on China-Indonesia collaboration during his visit resonated with GCL’s green energy initiatives across BRI regions. Against this diplomatic backdrop, Zhu proposed three forward-looking recommendations:
Leverage platform advantages to promote cross-border power connectivity and establish mechanisms for transnational electricity trading and renewable energy certificate recognition.
Expand green financing channels, such as green bonds, to support sustainable infrastructure development.
Foster international exchanges to help enterprises amplify their ESG narratives and enhance global competitiveness.
During the summit, Zhu, as a Steering Committee member, co-released the Joint Statement of the UN Global Compact’s High-Level Steering Committee on “Sustainable Infrastructure for the Belt and Road to Accelerate SDGs.”
On May 25, at the main summit, Zhu highlighted GCL’s achievements and vision in BRI green energy cooperation. “As a global leader in green and low-carbon technologies, GCL is driving the energy transition with innovations like granular silicon and perovskite,” he stated. By establishing R&D and production bases in BRI countries, including Indonesia, as well as in the U.S. and Japan, GCL has rolled out initiatives like its “Overseas Seeding” and “Lighting Up Africa” programs. Moving forward, GCL will deepen its involvement in sustainable BRI infrastructure, sharing technology and expertise with Indonesian partners to set new benchmarks for international cooperation.
A landmark moment of the summit was the joint release of the Global Photovoltaic Industry Sustainable Development Initiative by GCL and leading PV enterprises, including JA Technology, Jinko Solar, and LONGi Green Energy. Guided by the UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the initiative pledges comprehensive progress in environmental, social, and governance practices to drive positive global impact.
Premier Li Qiang’s visit has elevated China-Indonesia relations to new heights, while the collective action of top PV firms injects fresh momentum into BRI green energy cooperation. Together, these efforts aim to build a sustainable, zero-carbon future.
During his stay, Zhu also led a delegation to meet with Pak Edwin, President of Indonesia Power (PT Indonesia Power), where both sides agreed to expand collaboration in renewable energy, building on the success of the Kaba Clean Energy Project.
